This guide describes resources for researching legal news and general news.

Accessing Main Campus Databases

Caution by kaneiderdaniel/ CC BY SA 3.0

Law students' access to main campus databases is restricted, so you will need to plan ahead:

  • Law students can only access main campus databases on the law school and LMU campuses.
  • Proxy errors can shut off law school access to  main campus databases. If you're on campus but can't access a database, please contact reference@lls.edu.

Databases for Non-Legal News

Getting a Los Angeles Public Library Card

  • Any California resident can register for a Los Angeles Public Library card.
  • An LAPL card enables you to access almost all of LAPL's news databases and other electronic resources from anywhere.
  • You can get immediate access to LAPL databases by applying online for an LAPL ecard.
  • You can get a full library card (including access to LAPL's electronic resources) by visiting any LAPL library with a California driver's license or ID showing your current address.
  • If your ID is not official or does not show your current address, you may need to provide, additional documents, such as a utility bill.

Other Public Libraries

Most public libraries (e.g. Pasadena, Glendale, County of Los Angeles Public Library) have their own subscriptions to newspaper databases and provide library cards to any California resident.

Check the libraries' websites to learn how to apply for a card and see what databases they subscribe to.
